A strong introduction to the skilled trades should be practical, welcoming, and hands-on.
Blackfin Doors & Gates was pleased to welcome participants from the Vancouver Island Construction Association’s Construct Your Future program to our training centre. The program gives youth and adults an opportunity to explore construction careers and learn more about the many paths available in the skilled trades.
Learning by doing
Over the course of two-day orientations, participants were introduced to what an overhead door technician does each day. The sessions included hands-on work with tools, installation concepts, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
The goal was not to turn someone into a technician overnight. It was to make the work visible and approachable—to show how practical skills, problem-solving, safety, and teamwork come together on a real job.
Curiosity is part of the work
During recent orientations, we welcomed George, Amaya, and Myrrh to the training centre. Each brought energy, thoughtful questions, and a willingness to learn.
As they worked with hand tools and explored the equipment, they began to see the combination of technical knowledge and critical thinking the trade requires. Overhead door work can involve mechanical systems, electrical components, access controls, safety devices, customer communication, and changing conditions on site.
A career can begin with a chance to try the tools, ask questions, and see the work up close.
Building a stronger local workforce
Blackfin is proud to share a closer look at this work with people exploring their next step. Vancouver Island needs skilled people who can build, repair, maintain, and improve the systems that keep homes, businesses, and communities operating.
Programs like Construct Your Future help make those opportunities easier to see. For some participants, a short orientation may be the first step toward a rewarding career.
